Alonso Mudarra, Fantasia X (arr. Declan Zapala)
Welcome to my UA-cam channel where I post random videos of things I've created from month to month! This video was created for my segment in Guitar Techniques Magazine Issue GT363 (August 2024). This month I have transcribed Renaissance guitarist Alonso Mudarra's masterpiece 'Fantasia X' from the original Spanish vihuela tablature to classical guitar. The vihuela's tuning was EADF#BE but I have revised the fingerings so that it can work in standard tuning (EADGBE) on a classical guitar. It's a fun piece to play, especially when all the tricky cross-string Campanella notes ring out together! Enjoy!

Hello Declan! I absolutely love Guitar Techniques magazine. Yearly online subscriber. I actually have a question on your take of Greensleeves. I love the tempo the song and I am wanting to do this for a Christmas Cantata this year so I am practicing it from the February 2023 issue. I see in the tab is 94 bpm with a dotted quarter note but not sure how that is set in a metronome and in the video it seems slower than 94 bpm. Any help would be great appreciated! Thanks!! Robert Elias
@@robe.4841 Hey Robert, thanks for the message, great to hear you’re learning the arrangement! (UA-cam video when??🙌) Apologies for the confusion with the tempo there, in the monthly rush to deadline I appear to have botched that slightly! It is pretty much 94bpm but the indication on the music should read “eighth note (quaver) = 94bpm”. Alternatively you can count it in dotted half notes (dotted crotchets) with the metronome set to approx 31bpm - this will give you a more accurate feel for the pulse of the 6/8 / 12/8 time signature. I’d recommend starting with the 94bpm metronome marking to help regulate your eighth notes when passing through the dotted rhythms, and then once clean switching out to the 31bpm tempo on your metronome and putting your focus more onto feeling the dotted quarter note (dotted crotchet) pulse beats of the time signature. Hope that all helps Robert! Look forward to hearing it!:0) 🎸🎶
Thank you! Yes this helps tremendously! 👍🏼 I will do my best and post a recording hopefully around Christmas time!
@@robe.4841 Fantastic! Good luck Robert!
Increíble Declan! gracias por hacer y compartir toda esta música

Any video of uwl grade 5 study piece? Need to know how to play bar no one tap with ima Is this related to flamenco? Please upload if can small video Thanks

@@ruwanfernandoyamahaguitarc8443 thanks for your comment Ruwan. I’ve only ever taught from the Trinity syllabus so don’t have access to any materials outside of that, not sure I’ve heard of uwl before?
@@DeclanZapala mentioned your name on it Study pieces of London college of music(university of west London)classical guitar books
@@ruwanfernandoyamahaguitarc8443 oh my bad! I only knew it as LCM when I got commissioned to do it a while back! There are hopefully going to be a suite of accompanying videos at some point so keep an eye out for those! As for the "tap strings with i m a" direction, if you tap the three treble strings with i m a so that your i finger lands on string G, m finger lands on string B, and a finger lands on string E (all at once!) it prepares the fingers to then play the following 3 cross-string descending notes. You're essentially planting ima on the strings but trying to make a tap sound as you do it. Hope that makes sense!:0)
Brilliant. Hard work pays off - love
I can't get the "deck the halls" association out of my head. it's there every time the melody comes around
Please add to your list Quizas ,quizas, quizas Thank you

Great meeting you too John! See you around soon I’m sure!
Great, man!
So good Declan.
Nicely done Declan!
I swear every classical guitarist could palm a basketball so easily with their left hand
Just need to be able to throw a ball properly and we’ll be the full article!😅
Excellent! The Bach fella really knew how to write a tune!
True story.
Impecable!
Declan: The following.....IS....a compliment. :) Lagrima is the "Standard repertoire of all standard repertoire". As in, "The Standard" by which people should be musically judged as people who WERE taught the beautiful music that......NEVER "gets old". :) Yet, for some reason....many people think Lagrima, Adelita, Sor # 3, Sor # 5, Spanish Romance, etc., etc. are "overplayed". Your performance of this is elegant, legato and musical. Let THAT be the greater lesson learned here.....that because of the way you play this, this repertoire IS ALWAYS "new" to a new generation of people who have never heard it before. That is how each of us becomes....and stays a "Standard bearer" of the instrument. Excellent performance. "Keep 'em coming". :) Antoine
Thanks for the kind words Antoine, and I agree it’s always someone’s first time hearing this music. The UA-cam algorithm favours new content these days so we need to keep putting videos of this music out there in order for it to be heard. And on the topic of certain pieces being overplayed, I think if a few people do perceive something as being overplayed I’d take that over it not being played at all!
@@DeclanZapala Always remember that if someone claims a piece is "over played".....THAT means IT IS an 'audience favourite. And we all know that if something is an audience favourite, performers just play it MORE. :) NO different than "Dueling Banjos" or "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" on the banjo or "Ashoken Farewell" on the violin / fiddle. Keep up the good work. :). Antoine
Estupendo!

Very beautiful, can we buy The arrangement somewhere?
Thanks Marco! Glad you like it! I plan to publish a book of my arrangements at the end of this year but if you can't wait that long my arrangement actually appeared in Guitar Techniques Magazine issue GT329 which you can access on their app (search for Guitar Techniques in your smartphone or tablet's app store). It costs about £4 to unlock each issue but that gets you access to the full dots and tab for this as well as a load of other jazz, rock, and blues stuff to noodle around with! Hope that all makes sense Marco! Cheers!

still love this. been on my playlist for years
Beautiful piece and playing
👍👍👍
Good work. :) A little more love in the game and it would be perfect. It does sound a little hard and static.
I’m with you on that - sadly a deadline got the better of me this time - these go out on GT Mag each month so its always a bit frantic getting it all written and learned in time for a pre-deadline recording! Definitely planning to do a re-record of this at some point later down the line so thanks for reaffirming my desire to do so! Cheers!👍

Oi Declan! Muito linda!
Bro, how are you holding that guitar in place? You must be very popular with the ladies
🤣🤣🤣 Sorry to disappoint but I’m actually using a Gitano leg rest to prop the guitar up - that in combination with some anti-slip mat over my legs means the guitar stays propped up without any effort from me!:0)
